To his Excellency Genl. Sam Houston

President of the republic of Texas

Sir

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Excellency's official letter of 28th instant informing me that the senate had confirmed my nomination to the office of Secretary of State, and requesting me to say whether I accept of said appointment—

Your Excellency is fully aware of the debilitated state of my constitution and health, and also of the labors which devolve upon me in the land department I however accept of the appointment and am ready to enter upon the duties of the office, with the understanding that I be allowed the privilege of retiring should my health and situation require it—

I have the honor to present to your Excellency the assurances of my high respect and to remain your Excellency's
